Coffee production and export in Santo Domingo has a long history, dating back to the early 18th century. About 100 years ago, coffee exports accounted for 30% of Santo Domingo's GDP.

The mild, warm trade winds and ocean currents give the coffee berries time to ripen slowly, giving them their unique and characteristic flavour. In addition, Santo Domingo has an exceptional climate with year-round rainfall, resulting in a long harvest period from October to June. The berries are picked by hand, washed and dried in the sun on terraces.
