Café Burundi Inzahabu is a 100% Arabica specialty coffee with notes of milk chocolate and red fruit.
Burundi shares a border with two other renowned coffee-producing countries: Tanzania and Rwanda. Like its neighbors, Burundian production is dominated by thousands of smallholders who organize themselves and sell their coffee through cooperatives. As a result, the purchase of a single batch of coffee can have a considerable impact on many lives.
The Butihinda washing station was built in 1992 on the hill of the same name to shorten the long journey that coffee growers used to make in the 80s. Coffee cherries come from 1,600 growers from Maramvya, Masaka, Rushombo, Rukira, Munyinya, Ngara, Butihinda, Kinonora, Mugongo and Mukingiro. The Muyinga region was known for its gold mines and, in Kirundi, a Bantu language, "café Inzahabu" means "golden coffee".
The Butihinda washing station is owned and operated by Kalico Coffee Export. Kalico's founder and president, Angele Ciza, was the first woman to run a coffee business in Burundi in 1995. In some regions of Burundi, women are unable to inherit land, which severely limits their ability to work in agriculture. Angele's achievements, tenacity and unwavering perseverance in building a successful career in the coffee industry are an inspiration to other women across Burundi.
